An integrated environment for field-development analysis and monitoring: data accumulation, geological and hydrodynamic modelling, and selection of well interventions.
The task
Discovered reserves remain the core of an oil company’s resource base, while their structure deteriorates: drilling and operating costs rise, and more complex targets enter development. Existing reserves need to be produced as efficiently as possible.
At the same time the number of objects grows — field, formation, pool, well — along with the methods used to study them: production logging, well testing, laboratory and wave methods, core, and the results of well interventions. A large volume of heterogeneous data has to be processed, formalized, systematized, and brought into monitoring.
Purpose
The solution combines data accumulated during development, prompt access for specialists, and analysis tools.
- geological analysis: 2D/3D visualization, qualitative reservoir distribution, and quantitative characteristics, including hydrocarbon volumes;
- development analysis: recovery method, well placement, operating modes, and the performance of the development system and interventions;
- operational geological and hydrodynamic modelling;
- selection of areas and wells for enhanced oil recovery;
- forecast of intervention performance;
- projects for high-cost interventions, including sidetracks with a horizontal section and hydraulic fracturing;
- economic evaluation of interventions;
- reporting materials: maps, tables, charts, and figures.
What it includes
The software brings together a database, a development analysis and monitoring block, and a geological and hydrodynamic modelling block. Geologists, reservoir engineers, and EOR specialists work from one current dataset.
Database
Central storage of source geological and production data and of modelling results, with multi-user access. Import and export from arbitrary formats, including 3D models. Automated completeness and consistency checks, visual editing, charts, histograms, cross-plots, and report generation. The database is updated with new geology and production data.
Models
Sector models from different dates are loaded onto a single grid of the monitored object. 3D models are aligned along the formation section, and pool outlines are kept current by horizon, formation, and layer.
Modelling results are reviewed together with continuously updated well data: logs, production logging, fracturing, perforations, bottomhole depth, layers, permeability maps, oil-saturation profiles, and geological zonation.
Monitoring
The tools work with a geological and hydrodynamic model and without one.
- development maps and charts, histograms, and cross-plots;
- maps of offtake rates, isobars, water cut, reserves, and voidage replacement;
- flow directions, well influence zones, and a quantitative estimate of injector–producer interaction;
- well-stock analysis and forecasts of intervention performance;
- ranking of wells and areas to find candidates for intervention.
Losses, gains, and waterflooding
The losses and gains module builds maps and charts of oil-rate and oil-production changes, sets the comparison window, and exports losses to Excel with causes.
The waterflood module calculates or imports well-influence coefficients, influence zones, voidage-replacement and throughput maps, and the areas where injection should be reduced or increased. Streamlines and isobar maps can use the geological and hydrodynamic model. Tracer-survey results are compared with influence coefficients.
Selecting wells for intervention
Justification runs through problem areas, applicability criteria, injection patterns, the geology of the penetrated layers, well interaction, and the historical success of the method.
Maps of losses, remaining reserves, water cut, and voidage replacement are used together with well search by criteria, intervention-performance evaluation, and forecast rates.
